Rozanna Bejin shares an insightful reflection on Alzheimer’s
“Many years ago an interview on public radio really caught my attention. A woman recently diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease was being interviewed. She told about one of her first incidents of memory loss. It occurred while driving home from a shopping trip when she realized she could not remember how to get home. While listening to her words, I was driving home from Eau Claire’s Oakwood Mall, waiting at the red stoplights on the corners of Hastings Way and Brackett Avenue. I imagined myself sitting at those lights where multi-lanes meet wondering what I would do next if I suddenly couldn’t remember where to go or what to do. My solution was to sit in my car and not move the vehicle, but then I wondered if I would be able to make that decision.
People with early Alzheimer’s disease must experience many confusing and inexplicable situations. What a lost place that must be; the word insidious comes to mind. Then the traffic light turned green. I felt so fortunate to drive myself home, seemingly without thought.”
